Following on from the debate earlier this week, I chose to press Ministers at the Cabinet Office on inter-departmental work on the Illegal Migration Bill. In particular, I am concerned about the potential impact that the legislation will have on existing duties that local authorities are responsible for.
As the proposed Bill has wide ranging clauses that cover a variety of areas from modern slavery to education, it is important that Ministers are working together. I was reassured to learn from the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster that there are measures in place within Government to ensure effective collaboration. These measures include a number of committees that are tasked with ensuring coordination when it comes to parliamentary legislation.
I trust that through this process and through these committees, my concerns about the Illegal Migration Bill will be alleviated and that there will be greater clarity.
