This afternoon, it was a pleasure to join Northwood Councillor Henry Higgins to perform the opening ceremony of the new Pat Byrne Memorial Stand at Northwood F.C., in honour of the club’s Life President who sadly passed away in 2020.
Chairman Ian Barry gave a fitting tribute to the former Life President, which was appreciated by many of Pat’s family who were present at the ground to be part of the ceremony, as well as the squad and spectators.
I was interested to learn that the stand has been positioned in an area that Pat used to say was his favourite viewing point and was funded by money raised at a memorial match in his honour, which took place last October and involved two sides of the ex-club legends and players from the past, as well as family members.
To complete a fantastic afternoon, Northwood won against Chertsey Town 3-1, with a brilliant last-minute goal at the end of the match.
I am grateful to all for a wonderful afternoon and was heartened to pay tribute to somebody who was clearly very well-respected and thought of by so many.
