While it has now been over a year since the expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), I am still regularly contacted by residents who are mistakenly fined for a variety of reasons.
Representing a constituency on the borders of London, it was inevitable that a number of fines would be incorrectly issued to those driving just beyond the borders of the zone. This morning, during a regular session of topical questions to the Secretary of State for Transport, I outlined the concerns of my constituent, Mr Cooksley who was fined for driving in a non-compliant car even though he had not crossed into the ULEZ zone. We have seen fines incorrectly issued for compliant cars, but I am particularly exasperated by the issuing of fines for cars not travelling in the zone, but are incorrectly identified by misplaced or misaligned cameras.
While I have written to Transport for London who have thankfully issued a refund to my constituent, I am concerned about a repeat of this situation. I therefore asked the Secretary of State whether she would challenge the Mayor of London to take steps to ensure that this does not happen again.
