It was a real pleasure to visit West Lodge School in Pinner earlier this week, where I was given a tour of the facilities and met with the school council from Year 3 through to Year 6.
I was very interested to learn how the children have been raising awareness about the climate crisis, particularly in light of COP26, which has inspired them to make more environmentally-conscious decisions and changes. These range from becoming a 'lamination-free school' to reducing plastic waste at home.
Furthermore, as part of the school's sustainability drive, I understand the pupils have been investigating the 17 Sustainability Goals and created wonderful displays around the school. They have also been improving biodiversity within the school grounds and was delighted to hear that each class has sown seeds to create a border of wildflowers along the edge of the field.
It was fantastic to see how passionate and engaged the children are on the climate issue, and was asked some very interesting questions by those on the school council. It was also excellent to hear that pupils took part in the COP26 conference virtually, as it's absolutely imperative that these young voices are heard.
It was also a highlight to meet Diane, the school cook, who makes delicious homecooked meals that are clearly enjoyed by the children. I was interested to learn about 'meat-free Mondays', another great way to get children thinking about our planet.
I would like to say a huge thank you to all the pupils and staff at West Lodge for their time and I very much look forward to visiting again in the new year.
