I understand the conflict in the Middle East remains a deeply emotive issue amongst residents. While there was not an opportunity to vote on this in Parliament this week, I continue to support the Government’s position for a sustainable ceasefire and the release of hostages.
Of course, like my colleagues, I recognise the desperate need for increased humanitarian support to Gaza and the focus must be on practical solutions to protect civilian lives. I welcome the air dropping of aid into Northern Gaza and am encouraged that the Government is continuing to press for an immediate pause in fighting to allow additional aid into the region.
If progress towards a sustainable ceasefire is to be made, without a return to destruction, fighting and loss of life, then it is essential for any action taken to directly serve the aim of ongoing peace in the region.
Locally, it is important for all residents to feel safe in our community; racism and prejudice of any kind is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. I have been in touch with local police, who I know are being proactive in addressing concerns shared by residents.
